Here is a new one for me. A scam on Craig’s List where people will try to rent out vacant homes. I have heard of many different scams, but I guess there is a new scam created for the different events happening in our country. First the Katrina scams where people claimed to have been hurricane victims, but were not. Then, the scammers claimed to hold a fund raiser for the victims, but the money wasn’t going to anyone but the scammers. Now, there are a number of vacant homes just sitting there, and again scammers are out there trying to find a way to profit on this situation.
Dealing with the vacant homes listed on Craig’s List for rent, according to KVBC Las Vegas there were two people arrested for allegedly renting out a vacant home (in Las Vegas) to an unsuspecting woman and her children. The deal was up when the home owner found the woman in his house. What she told police was that she had rented the house through an ad placed on Craig’s List (signed a contract and paid cash rent). She helped police to arrest the two people that rented it to her by meeting them in a restaurant to pay her next month’s rent. A similar scam out there online would include scammers offering property for rent but at drastically lower than normal prices, and the catch is that you must pay sight unseen and upfront.
If you are looking for a rental online please be careful before you turnover your deposit. There are so many scams out there now, and getting your money back might not be possible.
The mother said she answered an advertisement on “CraigsList” offering a house for rent. She talked on the phone with a woman calling herself “Melinda.” “Melinda” arranged to meet the mother at a house the mother assumed was vacant. “Melinda” claimed to be the landlord and they agreed on the amount of rent and deposits totaling several thousand dollars.
The mother would meet “Melinda” each month at a different location and pay the rent in cash only. This was at “Melinda’s” direction. via: KVBC – Las Vegas
