Are you having an oyster roast this holiday season? South Carolina’s supply of oysters is rapidly declining. In the last 20 years about 1/3 of our states oyster beds have been closed to shell fishing. The water is greatly polluted, causing the Department of Natural Resources to close oyster beds. A large problem is that many shells are taken and never returned. When locals take oysters for events and roasts they often end up in the trash instead of back in the estuaries where they belong. The Department of natural Resources and Nature Conservancy have programs to create artificial reefs and use recycled shells to restore oyster beds. They are hoping to work with restaurants and locals to restore our oyster supply. Please remember to recycle your shells this oyster season.
