I have been hearing for years about how scents can help with the showing (or selling) of a home. Even if right now isn’t the best time to sell your home, this is an idea for when you are ready. Curb appeal helps to get buyers into the home, but once they are in there you want them to stay. What do you think is the first thing someone notices when thy walk into a home? It might seem like it is the new paint on the walls or the beautiful furniture and the room layout, but really it is the smell of the home. This is your first impression of the home so make it a great one!
Think about how your home smells….do you have any pets? What about active children that might have left their dirty laundry buried under their bed? Or, has your home been sitting vacant for awhile? There are many different scents that could distract a potential buyer, but remember we all have our own perception on what smells good or bad.
Some ideas to spruce up the scent in your home would be to bake or use candles. Baking adds a pleasant scent without seeming like you are trying to mask an odor, and with the many different scents for candles the options are endless.
Try baking an apple pie or some cookies just before the house is to be shown. Be careful not to burn it though. If you cook anything like I do it would be best to go with candles. Light some candles that give off the scent of freshly-baked cookies or that pie that you were planning on cooking. This way you won’t need to worry about cleaning up after cooking and it eliminates the risk of burning the food and the scent of burnt food. Some different scents that are sure to work would be vanilla, French vanilla, and butter cream as they give off the scent of cooking. Try to keep with neutral scents or freshly baked desserts as these have the best reaction from buyers.
With all the different tips about selling your home, I see this as the one most overlooked. So instead of trying this last or if all else fails, try it immediately and make that great first impression!

Its just now that I've heard about home scents.. as you've said, often times this is overlooked. Though, I believe that you've made a good point there, this does makes sense.
there is definitly some truth to this. obviously a smelly home will make it hard to sell. so a good smelling home should help.
