Great History….Great Economy
People today may not talk about Georgetown as much as the popular City of Charleston or the wonderful tourist area of Myrtle Beach, but Georgetown is in between both of these two trendy cities. It is the Middle-Man from such drastically different areas. A few things people may not know are that Georgetown has a lot to offer!! It has great history and a huge economy for its size.
Georgetown has offered a vast industry from rice, indigo, steel, timber and paper. The town was able to have vast areas for rice as the rivers were plentiful. In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s a group of loggers were able to see the potential Georgetown had with its timber, thus, starting the timber era. With its vast rivers, they were able to float the logs to the mills which also helped to start the paper industry. International Paper built its mill that is still currently in operation. Shortly after the paper mill was started, Georgetown Steel came into the area and began. At this time, Georgetown was considered to be one of the richest cities in America.
With the latest economic events, Georgetown has seen some change. Not as good as they would have liked to. However, with the famous Ghost Tours, Front St. Shops, Harbor Walk and considerable history Georgetown will always be a wonderful place to see. Actually, one of the latest boost to the economy may come sooner than later for Georgetown. Santee Cooper has been testing what they call the Palmetto Wind Project off the coast. They are testing to see if there are considerable amounts of wind offshore to have a wind farm. With this type of technology, if Santee Cooper does move forward in the project, it could bring over 11,000 new jobs to Georgetown and would bring almost no hazards, such as pollution or health. Looks like Georgetown might be seeing an increase in its community, not only in the economy but also with prospective development to house a growing need for jobs.
