Aynor Hoe Down

Downtown Aynor will host its annual Harvest Hoe Down Festival on September 17th and 18th. Meet up with friends and family at the Town Park, and visit over 140 craft booths. Enjoy entertainment, games, and hoe-down food favorites such as chicken bog, hot dogs, and funnel cakes. It’s free, including the parade at 10am and the street dance at 7pm. Last year over 20,000 people attended the event, and it’s been an Aynor tradition since
1979.

Oktoberfest

Celebrate all things German in Myrtle Beach, the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest on North Ocean Boulevard presented by the Oceanfront Merchants Association; lasting Saturday October 9th, 2010 from noon to 11pm. With authentic German music from popular Rheingold Band, German food from various restaurants, German beer, kids activities, German beer, amazing fireworks show and much more! This annual migration attracts shaggers from all over the U.S. to Myrtle Beach, where the crazy was originally created more than 5 decades ago, a unique twist to East Coast swing dancing. There is a rearrangement of footwork, giving the shag a unique look and feel, with majority of the movement being below the waist. The dance uses the balls of the foot, creating a very smooth style of dance; started in North Myrtle Beach by the Society of Stranders (SOS). Starting September 17th and ending on September 26th, a 10 day adult party will begin on the East Coast, with nightlife parties at the SOS lounges including Fat Harold’s, Ducks, Duck’s II, the OD Arcade, & the clubs at the OD Beach & Golf Resort; each lounge offering its own unique quality. Myrtle Beach Airport Sees Record Traffic

This year many vacationers made Myrtle Beach their new vacation destination as well as our loyal yearly visitors; the Myrtle Beach International Airport reported that more people flew in and out during July than ever before, breaking the 100,000 passenger mark. According to numbers recorded by airport officials, more than 111,000 passengers boarded outbound planes and more than 117,000 passengers arrived into Myrtle Beach. With these numbers, we were able to beat the records set in July 2005 and peak months in 2007. Although summer is not the peak season for golf outings, Golf Holiday representatives said they’ve also seen an increase in packages and bookings compared to this time last year. The organization anticipated the growth in passengers and is looking forward to a hopeful increase for prime golf season in September and October. With a major expansion project in the works, positive news comes as the airport prepares to increase the number of gates available to passengers and airlines from seven to twelve. New Carolina Forest Elementary School

Last Thursday, the Horry County Planning Commission approved the plans for a new Carolina Forest Elementary school in Berkshire Village. The school is anticipated to open in August of 2012.

The 40 acre school will displace 70 planned residential homes in the community. The PDD is requiring $1000 per home displaces, which will equal $70,000 to be paid in improvement fees. These fees will be paid either by the school or the developer. The district is anticipating paying about $200,000 towards the project including signalization at the intersection of Augusta Plantation Drive and River Oaks Drive.
